Now, back to the story...
We are running together in memory of Richie Barnes as a group that is the very representation of athletic eclecticism. There are those of us who have completed marathons and those who have circumnavigated whole islands on foot. Then, there are those whose personal challenge each week is to survive a weekend of light exercise without developing crushing central chest pain.
What we all have in common is that we knew and loved Richie, and his appreciation of fun and music. From piano players to failed cellists; guitar maestros to those who dabbled with descant recorder; and from chamber choristers to aficianados of The Rugby Song: we could be described as something of a symphonius potpourri. In September this year, we plan to be inspired by this musicality in our waltz through the streets of Newcastle in aid of Mencap and the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust (HCPT).
Richie was a regular on the annual Lourdes Pilgrimage with HCPT and, as well as donating to a healthy sum in support of Mencap and its outstanding work for those with learning difficulties, your generous contributions will enable young people to travel to Lourdes with the HCPT, giving them an invaluable opportunity to meet and assist unique characters like Richie.
Many thanks in advance for your kind donations.
Twelve runners, thirteen (and a bit) miles, the memory of one fun-loving legend...
