Story
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
At 3:30am on the morning of Thursday 16 July we were once again cast into the world of greasy breakfasts, yelling Sgt Majors and stinking lavatories without paper at Okehampton camp on edge of Dartmoor.
At 5am post rememberance service we were set loose on the Commando's qualifying test for a green beret - the 30 miler. Map, compass, no footpaths, some marshes, a lot of rivers, 5 tors and 40lbs on backs. We might as well have emptied buckets of water into each boot on the startline given weather and bogs.
We finished 9hrs 30mins later, 1hr behind the winning team and 9th out of a total 50 teams. Forty of these teams were serving marines.
Team injuries include several knees now reliant on codeine for daily walking, waist and shoulder blades raw and bleeding from bergen rub (+ similar sufferance in other unmentionable extremities). Legs a little stiff. Several black toenails soon to be parting company with feet. Just like the old times.
Not a pub or beer in sight. I hope you feel we earned our pennies...
