Story

In March 2023, Andrew Osborne successfully completed his 3000 mile row, solo and unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean in 78 days, to raise money for the Amy Osborne Memorial Fund at the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. He had to deal with capsizes, equipment failure, losing over 20% of his body weight, sleep deprivation, storms, solitude, all whilst rowing over one million oar strokes across a 5 mile deep ocean. For most of the 11 weeks the closest human being to him was in the International Space Station.

Amy Osborne, Andrew’s youngest daughter died in her sleep six years ago from an undiagnosed heart condition at the age of 25. She became one of the 12 young people who die each week in the UK from this cause. Like Amy, 80% don’t experience any symptoms. Amy’s memorial fund set up by Andrew’s family at the charity CRY has so far tested nearly 900 children and young adults for undiagnosed heart conditions. He has raised around £200,000 to be able to test thousands of children and continues to raise money to fund research and to broaden awareness. His adventure was raised in Prime Minister’s Question Time, featured on the BBC, ITV and in many national newspapers and magazines. He was also one of the top 3 JustGiving Endurance Fundraiser finalists of 2023 out of 14,000 nominations.
