LEICESTER BABY LOSS APPEAL
You may think that a baby being born stillborn is something that happens rarely, but out of the 4600 births per year at the Leicester General Hospital, sadly 1-2 babies per week are identified as having foetal abnormalities or have died resulting in stillbirth.
I don't think unless you have experienced the loss of a new born baby you can even begin to imagine how that would feel. What I do know is that an environment that is surrounded with healthy new born babies is not the correct place for bereaved parents to be cared for.
A mother who experienced a still birth expressed "when you bury your baby, you don't just bury their future, you bury with them your dreams, your own plans and your own future. You make as many memories in those few days as you can, as you know they will have to last you a lifetime."
These memories need to be made in a peaceful and appropriately designated unit away from the chance of hearing and seeing a new born baby.
This can be achieved by creating a suite which provides an en suite wet room and a separate area for the baby with a courtyard attached. Parents will have protected time to spend with their baby and the midwife will have an environment which is appropriate to care for bereaved parents fulfilling their needs and wishes at this traumatic time.
A midwife highlights how it feels now when caring for bereaved parents “it can be very difficult when you feel under pressure at work to give the care and support you want to. Often I think the importance of the precious few hours the parents have is lost when the ward is busy. I need to have enough time to explain properly what the parents' choices are. I don't want to rush or compromise the care I give. The memories I help to provide are priceless and have to last lifetime. There will no Christmases or birthdays or first days at school for these parents. All they have is now."
Please help us create a peaceful place for bereavement.
