Story
Inspired by the work and fundraising of a great nurse, our aunt Una for the Foyle hospice we have decided to join her whilst she does the Great North Run and help raise some much needed funds for this wonderful cause.
As most of us know having come into contact with a hospice at some time in our lives they provide much needed care and support for patients with cancer or other terminal illnesses and their families.
The concept of a Hospice for the North West of Ireland was triggered off by local GP Dr Tom McGinley visiting an 18 year old man dying of terminal cancer. Dr Tom felt, not only his own inadequacy, but also that of the Health Service in general at being unable to provide the necessary care for this young man. This failure became a personal challenge which subsequently became the vision of a Hospice for the area. A small steering committee was set up in early 1984 and intense fundraising started in earnest. The hospice is fully self-sufficient, raising the funds for its own operation through private and corporate donations.
MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO SUPPORTED US ONLINE AND OFFLINE... WE HAVE FINALLY BEEN TO NEWCASTLE AND COMPLETED THE GREAT NORTH RUN, IT WAS A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE AND WE ARE AMAZED AT HOW GENEROUS YOU HAVE ALL BEEN! THANKS AGAIN!
