Fundraising for Kids Operating Room
Story
Let’s help fund 30 child operations before I’m 30…
My goal through grit is to raise £2,275, which – at just £75 an operation – could help fund 30 children across the world receive the life-changing surgery they desperately need. With my next birthday being the big 3 0 – it seems only apt that’s our goal!
After years of physical neglect, I began working for Kids Operating Room, and realised just how precious my body is – and how many individuals across the world, including wee kids, wish for able-bodies like ours.
It was time to change. And what better way to motivate myself through the gruelling 25-week training programme, reluctant changes to (quite bad) eating and drinking habits and rebuilt self-confidence than to compete in 4 iconic races across the world... that’ll help ensure 30 children have access to safe and timely surgery.
With the NHS and/or private healthcare, watching your child or being that child isolated in pain may seem unfathomable.
But it is a reality.
For children in low to middle income countries, not getting the surgery they need is more deadly – than malaria, HIV and TB COMBINED.
Without the surgeries performed on me, it'd be unlikely I could now chew, smell or hear... if I then managed to survive the burst appendix at 16*

Surgery is life-saving. And to these 30 children, surgery will mean so much more than the obvious – it means returning to school, family unification, respect, play, laughter, friendship, an easier path to love and to become an adult with economic prospects that counters a life of poverty and isolation.
The races I am competing (/completing HA) in are:
🏰 Bamburgh 10k on the 11th of June
🌊 Great North Run Half Marathon on the 10th of September
⛰️ Two Valleys 20km Trail Run on the 29th of September
🗽NEW YORK MARATHON on the 5th of November
Totalling 58 miles!
Additionally, my training plan requires me to run 507 miles from the 1st of May to 5th of November. Yep… that’s Sophie Mackenzie… running 507 miles – NOT including the races.
