Story

300 Mile Cycle Challenge 23rd – 27th June 2010

Beating Bowel Cancer

300 miles, 2 countries, 1 unforgettable adventure all in aid of Beating Bowel Cancer

Cycling from to with long days in the saddle and some strenuous hill climbs. The Team from South Staffs Water: , , Josh Etheridge, Dave Garrard, Steve Perks, Colin Richardson, Brian Thomas, Kev Watkins, John Webb are ‘gearing’ up to each cycle 300 mile !!!! Our aim to raise in excess of £20,000.

Over 4 days we travel:

Day 1 London to 77 miles

Day 2 Calais to  80 miles (the grueller)

Day 3 Arras to 77 miles

Day 4 Compeiegne – Paris – 55 miles (a light day)

The organizers say we will spend on average 6 hours a day in the saddle! And probably walking like John Wayne for 6 weeks later!

We’ve committed ourselves and registered paying £99 each – this gave us our pack:  kit list, insurance requirements and training  guide prioritized on

Non cyclists / moderately fit

Cyclists / moderately fit and

Cyclists / fit

You chose which category we each belong too!!!

So a 20 week and 10 week training plan has been provided and underway for some of us.  Road bikes have been bought or in the process of and padded trousers to protect the appropriate parts are in place and – ‘do they make my bum look big in this’ no one gives a damn because you need the paddin! This is serious stuff.  Each of us investing in bikes, clothing and time for training.

So What is Beating Bowel Cancer.  It is a national charity that aims to save lives from the UKs second biggest cause of cancer deaths.  They work hard to raise awareness of symptoms, promote early diagnosis and encourage open access to treatment choice to those affected by bowel cancer.  They provide information, education and support to patients, their families the general public and the medical profession.

So not only are we embarking on our training plan but also our fund raising activities to help raise in excess of £20,000 by mid April!

AND if you want to join us for a pedal you are more than welcome – and if you pass us on the roads whilst driving please sound your horn, shout, flash your lights – any encouragement goes!!!
