We fund research and provide support to improve blood cancer patients' lives

Story

On Sunday 30th September I will be taking part in the Great North Run to raise money for 'Leukaemia Research'.    I'll be joining nearly 50,000 other hardy northern souls on the 13 mile course to the coast.

The BUPA Great North Run is the world's largest half marathon.   Since it first began in 1981, nearly 650,000 people have crossed the finish line at South Shields.  A total of 8,027,758 miles have been run since the race began, which is the equivalent of 308 times around the world.  The least I can do is to add a further 13 miles!

Of course, it's also - perhaps primarily - a great opportunity to raise money for important causes.  I'll be joining the 'Banana Army', a team of runners wearing bright yellow vests (what else?) and raising money for 'Leukaemia Research'.

This particular charity is very close to my heart.  Many of you will know that for the last 10 years I've taught at Bedford School.  During that time I was lucky enough to teach and get know a pupil called Andrew Lucken.  Andrew  was diagnosed with Leukaemia at the age of 14.   He showed extraordinary fortitude during his illness, facing his treatment with exceptional stoicism and good humour.  He never complained about the hand he'd been dealt and always went out of his way to help others.  Sadly, Andrew came out of remission in 2006 and, despite the bravest of battles, lost his fight for life in May 2007 at the age of 18.   He was a tremendous student and a cracking lad, and I'd like to dedicate this run to him by raising as much money as possible for 'Leukaemia Research'.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to make a donation: Leukaemia Research will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.

Andrew
