Story

We did it!!!!!

After months of training we are very pleased and proud to tell you that on 26th September at the Great Salford Swim in Manchester we were triumphant in achieving our challenge of swimming the one mile circuit of Salford Quays.  The water temperature dropped massively in the approaching days and on the day was recorded as 14.5 degrees!  Super cold!

After acclimatising ourselves in the warm up zone, we were off.  Amongst crowds of swimmers wearing neon pink swiiming hats (250 swimmers in our wave) we set our own pace and gradually swam our way to the finish line.  We agreed that we would all meet at the finish line in readiness for our team celebration and in less than one hour that was exactly what we did.

A huge thanks to everyone that has sponsored and supported us.

Unfortunately as you may have already heard, the Great North Swim was cancelled due to unsafe levels of Blue/Green Algae in Lake Windermere.

As we have been training hard this season and are ready for the challenge we have decided to enter the Great Salford Swim on 26th September 2010, which involves swimming a one mile route of the Salford Quays in what is forecast to be very cold waters!  We are very excited that we have been able to enter the final race of the year following the cancellation of the Great North Swim and we hope to bring you some exciting success stories following the event on the 26th September.

Once again, many thanks for looking at our site and your kind donations.

For those of you that know the four of us, you will know that we are always up for a challenge.  This year we have decided to compete in the Great North Swim, at Lake Windermere on behalf of the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity.  Our challenge is to complete the 1 mile open water swim in chilly water temperatures rumoured to be anything from 10-18 degrees!

In preparation we have all created our own personal training programmes.......progress to date follows:

      >   Claire  - Not going well.......currently recovering from a knee op

      >   Sarah - Progress is slow by steady........looking very promising

      >   Tony - Enjoying the challenge......hoping to be able to master floating in the next few weeks

      >   Robin - Getting some good rhythm.......speed a bit of a challenge

Currently all training is completed in the luxury of a warm swimming pool. We figured development of technique, speed and rhythm was best mastered in the luxury of a warm environment before exposing ourselves to the dark, dirty, cold waters of the local lakes!  We are hoping for a warm summer so that the lakes warm up!

As well as this being a personal challenge for us all, we have decided to support a very worthy charity at the same time.  Our aim is to raise a minimum of £1,000 for the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity.

The Rainbow Trust Children's Charity provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

The four of us are fully committed to this challenge and hope to be successful in both completing the race and raising our fundraising target of £1,000.  If you are able to support our challenge by sponsoring us we would all be very appreciative.  Any donations small or large will be gratefully received and will contribute to the success and progress of a great charity - The Rainbow Trust Children's Charity.

Many thanks in advance for your support.
