Story

PLEASE NOTE, ALL MONEY DONATED ON THIS SITE GOES TO THE SRI LANKAN CARD PROJECT

Background to my project:

In 2005, after the tsunami, many camps and orphanages were created to take in displaced families or children who had lost their parents. For a group of volunteers working with these families, they soon discovered that life for the children could be quite boring, and so started a series of activity workshops. Each volunteer used whatever skill they had, to share and entertain the displaced families and the children.

The volunteers started running these workshops not only for tsunami-effected people but for other children living in orphanages and deprived areas. What they soon realised was that, as a result of these fun activity workshops, they could raise money for the community. The money raised could then be used to buy things that the children needed in these communities and orphanages . So they extended the card project and got the children to colour shapes and pictures that could then be made into seasonal greeting cards. These cards were sold to the friends and families of the volunteers, and also to local businesses.
The card project is now in its 4th year, selling internationally and has helped over 150 kids so far.

100% of the profits from the sale of the cards are used to improve the quality of life for the children. We use the money to buy important supplies such as Water tanks and purifiers, installed electricity, built a playground ,bought beds and bed sheets, school supplies, clothes, shoes, insect repellent systems, light bulbs, sports equipment ,outings, meals and more...

Donations

Whilst we do raise money through the Christmas Card project, your donations are a lifeline for many of these children that live in the deprived areas and  orphanages of Sri Lanka. To find out more about who we directly support and where your donations would be going, please visit to our website: www.srilankacards.com

There are also other ways of helping the Sri Lanka Christmas Card project:

- Donate second hand goods

If you are travelling to Sri Lanka and have space in your luggage for things like clothes, books, pots and pans, toys, pens, pencils, computers - ok you would need quite a big space in your luggage for a second hand computer! But maybe you could donate the shipping costs so that we could get your out-of-use computers to Sri Lanka. Even the most basic PC could be put to good use.

- Donate Skills

If you are based in Sri Lanka, or even just visiting and have time to come to the centre to teach the kids, build, repair etc it would help so much and mean so much to the children and the staff team (orphanages)/community leaders (deprived areas).

Spread the word!

We could do with all the help we can get publicising this project and spreading awareness about our mission. Please forward the website link (www.silankacards.com) and this page to your family and friends, and get them to do the same. Maybe you could help us maintain and update this website. Please contact me through the website link if this is something you would like to do for the project or if you would like further information.
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to donate and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. So please give generously!
