Story
One of the major flaws of the UK Asylum System is the need for asylum seekers to go to Croydon in London in order to lodge a claim for asylum. They are given no alternative, and no governmental funding or assistance to make the journey. This is one of the reasons so many find themselves living destitute. There is more information here.
To call attention to how much of a problem this is, STAR are going to (symbolically!) walk to Croydon. It is about 400 miles from Glasgow to Croydon, a very long way to go if you have no money, no right to work and no support. Between us, members of STAR will walk 400 miles. (At least) 20 of us will walk 20 miles each along the West Highland Way, on Sunday 3rd March.
Money donated will be given to the Refugee Survival Trust, who provide grants and train tickets to those who want to claim asylum, allowing them to make the journey to Croydon. There is more information on the RST and their work here: http://www.rst.org.uk/
