Story

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh was the nation’s first center to perform organ transplantation in children. Since 1981, the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation has performed more solid organ transplants in children than any other center in the nation. In 2004, Dr Mazariegos was appointed Chief of Pediatric Transplantation and he and his colleagues aim to provide the best care for every child coming to Pittsburgh with organ failure who may benefit from the medical, surgical, and transplant therapies available here.

With a philanthropic gift from the Citrone 33 Foundation in 2017 catalyzing our desire to further  transform care for all children worldwide, Dr. Mazariegos and colleagues  established the Starzl Network, www.starzlnetwork.org. Named in honor of Dr. Thomas Starzl, the network seeks to honor his life-changing impact on pediatric transplantation and his vision that children would lead fully normal lives after transplantation. The network is a collaborative learning health system focused on accelerating progress in pediatric transplantation by bringing together leading institutions, patient and family advocates and technology partners to develop best practice and widely disseminate the learning and tools developed.

Recognizing the impact philanthropy has made over the last few decades, Dr. Mazariegos and his family plan to make a permanent impact and leave a long-lasting legacy, via the establishment of the Mazariegos Family Endowed Fund in honor of Thomas and Joy Starzl.

This endowment will directly support the vision of the Network to  support the care and cure of children undergoing the journey of  transplantation, promote surgical and medical excellence and work urgently to address the greatest needs facing the transplant patient today. All donations made to the endowment are tax deductible to the extent legally allowed.

Dr. Mazariegos invites you to join together with his family, friends, and the transplant community to help us continue to provide exceptional transplant care- both here in Pittsburgh and throughout the network-  ensuring every child has the chance to live the life they were intended to live, now and for years to come.
