Story
Thank you for visiting the St Mary's College Running Team fundraising page. We are all running in memory of a wonderful, brave lady, Chris Leech whose life ended prematurely due to Myeloma. Chris was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in January 2004. She had two stem cell transplants but both failed to give her any lasting resistance to the disease and after a very brave fight she died in November 2007 aged 54.
We want to help raise funds to try to find a cure for this disease. Please dig deep and sponsor us online today.
Multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cell, is an incurable but treatable disease. While a myeloma diagnosis can be overwhelming, it is important to remember that there are several promising new therapies that are helping patients live longer, healthier lives. The estimated frequency of multiple myeloma is 5-6 new cases per 100,000 persons per year. At present there are more than 15,000 people in the United Kingdom living with multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is a progressive blood disease. It is a cancer of the plasma cell, an important part of the immune system that produces immunoglobulins (antibodies) to help fight infection and disease. Hypercalcaemia, anaemia, renal damage, increased susceptibility to bacterial infection, and impaired production of normal immunoglobulin are common clinical manifestations of multiple myeloma. It is often also characterised by diffuse osteoporosis, usually in the pelvis, spine, ribs and skull.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Myeloma UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor us now!
Many thanks for your support.
Go Myeloma!
