Story

Me (Tyler Bennett) and my dad (Michael Bennett) are cycling the Thailand Challenge in November 2023 to raise money for Teens Unite, a charity inextricably linked to my life during and after cancer diagnosis. This will be a challenging task for both of us and will give great satisfaction doing it together, someone who has been with me throughout my treatment and provide encouraging mental attitude to achieve anything, even if it gets tough.

I (Tyler Bennett) was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in February 2014, which is an aggressive form of blood cancer. I was then classed as being in remission, however, this didn't last long and I relapsed, where my cancer had come back and was even more aggressive. I then undertook a bone marrow transplant in February 2015.

Ever since my diagnosis I had always struggled with the physical and mental demands of going through cancer. My body just was not able to achieve what is was able to before. I used to be in such great shape and be at peak physical performance. Eventually, my aspirations for trying to achieve what I had and was able to do before cancer were diminishing. It's been a constant fluctuating challenge after having gone through cancer, having ups and downs.

Teens Unite is a charity which supports young people fighting cancer to live their best life, while others search for a cure. They inspire young people to recognise their potential now and in the future and empower them to live every moment to the full. When you're faced with cancer, plenty of people will tell you what you can't do, but they show us as young people what we can do; not letting the 'c' word hold us back or define who we are.
