Story
As many of you know I have just returned from spending the summer in Namibia working for Raleigh International on a part self-funded, part work-funded expedition. During the expedition we helped build a school in Oshana, construct 3 playgrounds for communities and schools, trek over 1000km and placed infrastructure into a new national park and a wildlife rehabilitation centre. In the process we hopefully changed the lives of the expedition’s participants and staff and those who worked with, and will benefit from the projects in Namibia.
I have returned to the UK and have decided I wish to give more time to Raleigh International, as I feel strongly that they make a difference, not only to those who take part but also to the people who come into contact with projects in the areas Raleigh International operates in.
I have negotiated an unpaid sabbatical from work so I can partake in a further, self-funded, expedition as a staff manager in the south of India in the New Year. This work will involve working with the young people and the local community to insure the successful completion of a project. Projects will be based in the communities in the Tamil Nadu; Karnataka and Kerala regions as well as the The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (part of the UNESCO protection programme) and Western Ghats mountains.
As part of my commitment to Raleigh International I have to raise £1950 to contribute towards the cost of running the projects during the expedition. I’m undertaking various fundraising challenges over the next 2 months to raise this total, including a sponsored “Sober New Years Eve” in the spirit on the expedition (Raleigh International expeditions are alcohol-free).
Any donations would be gratefully received.
20/12/07 - Things are getting sorted, I have been asked to be Deputy Expedition Leader (or DEL to those in the know). Have met some of the staff team and they all seem great. Currently organising a raffle for all those who donate on this page. Win a day sailing in the lovely Cornwall! Thank you Mum and Dad for donating the prize.
30/12/07 - The great sober New Years Eve is happening tomorow, creation of Viking costume is well underway and it looks like it might be a chilly night! If your in St Ives come and say hello and sign a t-shirt.
