Story
We did it! Some 300 riders cycled for over 35 hours, over 355 miles during the last five days of May. Between us all, we raised over £1.2 million!
Thank you to all who have so kindly sponsored me. The ride was inspirational, hard work, fun, wet and cold, hot and sweaty, fast, slow - in short, an amazing experience.
I rode my bicycle with fellow Viking Julian Pollard from Caen to Dunkirk, visiting a number of battlefield sites on the way. You can find out more at http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/bbbr.html.
Just to remind you why. The battalion I served in from 1974 to 1985, 1 Royal Anglian (The Vikings), recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan. They lost nine members, had 57 battle casualties and over 70 other injured. They were awarded 1 DSO, 6 MC's, 1 QGM, 5 MiD's and 1 QCVS. A lot of the wounded have found themselves at Headley Court, the military rehabilitation centre. Help for Heroes, a fantastic new charity, is raising money for much needed facilities and equipment at Headley Court. Their first target of £6 million has now been reached and work will soon start on building the new facilities at Headley Court.
You can still make a donation if you wish. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Help for Heroes will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
If you are particularly bored, you can read my weekly training blog and report on the ride at http://timwilkes.blog.co.uk
Many thanks for your support, I appreciate it.
