Update from Jon Walker - Monday 21st June 2010
Firstly a heart felt thank you to all of you that have been kind enough to sponsor Matthew, Kim and I for the 3 Peaks Challenge, which I am delighted to say we completed last Thu / Fri in a remarkably good time of 22 hours and 46 minutes – bearing in mind we are a team made up of two middle aged men and a veteran! As promised I have attached the photographs from each of the three mountains and as you will see, we look progressively more tired on each one! There were (and are) a few aching limbs, but given our reason for undertaking the challenge and the amount we have raised for the British Heart Foundation; it was most definitely worth it. And on that note, the latest update is that we are up to £6,500 in total thanks to your generosity.___________________________________________________________________________________________
You may remember we came asking for sponsorship in autumn last year when the four of us – Matt Bright, Kim Martin, Jon Walker and Matthew Reed entered, attempted, ran, crawled squelched our way through the Royal Marine Commando challenge. Thanks to all of you that supported us and the generous offer to double our money by our employer Towergate we raised over £5000 for Cancer Research. At the end of the event we all agreed to go for something bigger and better for 2010 and the 3 Peaks Challenge – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and in under 24 hours, was agreed on.
Tragically in November 2009 Matt Bright died while out running of an undiagnosed heart condition leaving an irreplaceable hole in all of our lives. In memory of Matt and his lust for life the 3 of us are going to attempt the 3 peaks challenge on 17th - 18th June. There was obviously only one charity that we wanted to climb 3 mountains in 24 hours for - The British Heart Foundation, which is actively researching into the reasons why apparently very healthy individuals hearts suddenly stop.
Please give what you can. Coronary heart disease causes over 90,000 deaths a year in the : approximately one in five deaths in men and one in six deaths in women.
We are again hoping to raise £5000 for this worthy cause and have prepared meticulously (not!) for our biggest challenge yet!
