Hi,
My name is Tom Russell. I am 17 years old and at present I am in lower sixth form studying towards my A levels at Sir Roger Manwood's School in Sandwich, Kent. I learnt to swim when I was 13 and since then I have been swimming with Dover Lifeguard Club (DLGC). I really enjoy open water swimming and the English Channel is the most prestigious and challenging open water swim in the world. I completed a channel relay as part of a team of 6 when I was 14 and rowed across the channel on my 16th birthday as part of a coxed 4 with Dover Rowing Club. I have been training for the past 2 years in the sea with my coach, Lee Wakeham, who is the Open Water coach for the DLGC and with Freda Streeter and her team in Dover Harbour, watched over by my mum. I have worked as an observer on the pilot boats escorting other swimmers, so I am well aware of the nature of the challenge and the risks involved.
However, enough of me, I want to complete my challenge and by doing it, I also want to help other young men, some not much older than me who have been injured or killed during recent conflicts.I could not think of a better cause to support than this one. Please could you help them by supporting me in my challenge to raise money for our brave men and women in the forces.
My main aim is to reach France, but I would also like to complete the swim in less than 12 hours.
