Story
Nepal is one of the materially poorest countries in the world with 25% of its population living below the poverty line on 50 cents a day. Many people rely on forests for their livelihood, and deforestation is a major problem, with 70% of Nepal's forests cover having been lost.
The California based reforestation non-profit, Eden Reforestation Projects, is active in Nepal and is planting millions of trees. Nepali people from the most disadvantaged backgrounds are employed to plant and care for the trees, which then provides people with a livelihood.
One third of the world's total forest cover (an area twice the size of the USA) has been lost in the last 10,000 years, since the end of the last ice age, due to human activity. Half that loss has occurred in the last 100 years, with now up to 15 billion trees being cut down annually. Deforestation alone causes approx. 10 percent of worldwide carbon emissions and is a major driver of the climate crisis.
We are a group of 4 people from the town of Castle Douglas in SW Scotland, Christopher, Keith, Lyn and Max. We will walk 1 million steps collectively to fundraise for Eden Projects. We aim to complete our walk within 1 month, starting 20 Oct 2021. We wish to raise enough funds to plant 15,000 trees in Nepal, i.e. £2,500 and it is our hope that this will support the people and environment of Nepal, as well as contributing to the global effort to avert the danger of climate catastrophe.
Eden Reforestation Projects can plant 5 trees in Nepal for every USD 1 they receive in donations (GBP 1 = 6 trees
Any support you feel you might be able to give would be hugely appreciated, the size of the donation really does not matter, it is more the thought that counts, of course. And even if you are not able to give at this time, if you wished to still support us a share on your social media or with your contacts would be fantastic too!
Thank you so much!
