My name is Vanessa Newberry and I am a 22 year old Graduate from St.Mary's University. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the world and I am very passionate about improving the lives individuals less fortunate than myself. I am particularly keen to make an impact in the lives of children, as they rarely have any influence over their personal situations or surroundings. I was alarmed to learn of the vast numbers of people around the world who are deprived of the most fundamental resources, such as clean drinking water and adequate sanitation. These are resources that we often take for granted, particularly in the Western World and it is my belief that we should all be looking at ways to raise awareness and taking steps to remedy the situation. Imagine having to teach in a school where many of your pupils primary concern was whether or not they would have enough water to drink. This would have a detrimental affect on any morally conscious adult, to see children suffering and unwell. Because of the impact that this has had on me, I have decided to dedicate my own time and efforts to fundraise £5000 that will provide two hand-dug wells that will provide safe clean drinking water to 1000+ people in Mozambique Africa. With your support this dream will become a reality. The Facts: - 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe water
(roughly one out of every six people in the world).
- 1.8 million people die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation: 90% are children under 5.
- 2.6 billion people in the world do not have proper drains or toilets (roughly two out of every five people in the world)
- Water-related disease is the second biggest killer of children worldwide.
The Borehole Rehabilitation Programme: The hand-dug well will be dug by people with spades, rather than with drilling equipment. Local people are trained to maintain the wells themselves. For each Borehole The Borehole Rehabilitation Programme team will spend three days on the actual rehabilitation and three days will be spent training the borehole maintenance team. The Borehole Rehabilitation Programme team will do a two day training on financial management and procurement and work with the community leaders and borehole maintenance team to develop a sustainable plan for maintaining the borehole. The Charity: Samaritan’s Purse is a non-profit, Christian organization, which provides emergency relief, and development assistance to suffering people around the world.
