We fundraise for our patients to complement existing care and facilities

Story

The Challenge: We are completing a trek across the Sahara Desert in order to raise money for Poole Hospital Maternity Ward/Childrens Unit.  The trek will involve covering 20km over 6 hours per day.

The Project: We have also allowed 2 days of our trip to assist with renovations to help a local community  improve the educational environment for the resident children of Oulaid Driss. This will enable us to help children across the world, whilst raising money for children within our local community.

The date: 17th October - 25th October

The Participants: Steve Amos, Kelly Wanstall, Chris Wanstall, Lynsey Treharne

The Charity: Poole Hospital Maternity Ward/Childrens Unit

What will your money be spent on:

The money raised will be split between the Maternity Unit and The Children's Ward:

We are raising funds to help equip the new Maternity Unit which is to be built on the main hospital site, which will also house the Intensive Care unit. This will include 20 new delivery rooms, 2/3 operating rooms and 20+ Intensive care cots. The new facilities will also include in patient wards, day assessment facilities, ante natal and out patient care and full support services. Our money will be used to buy new equipment for the unit to make sure that Poole Hospital can provide the very best in modern Maternity care. The new unit is to be built to cater for up to 6,000 births each year.

We are also raising funds for the children's unit, which is currently split across four wards. The wards see children from the age of birth up to eighteen years old. Whilst the children are in hospital Poole Hospital have to cater for their school work. There is a dedicated school room on the ward which is staffed by trained teachers and teaching assistants who are able to teach children at all ages and abilities (this is funded by Poole Borough Council). They also have trained play specialists that are on hand to entertain the children in their very own play room. The ward is also having an outside play area developed so that the children and parents can go outside.

The ward is rapidly growing and with the influx of people coming into the area, they are getting busier every year. The advances in medical science, means the ward needs new items of equipment. The ward is currently 'wishing' for a blood gas machine.  When a child is on oxygen for a long period of time, nurses have to monitor the amount of gas in their blood stream using a blood gas machine; too much gas will be harmful for a child.

Hi Everyone

I'm emailing everybody to let you know that unfortunately Brian has had to withdraw from participating in the Trek in october due to his ankle injury which now requires surgery. I would personally like to thank Brian for all his hard work in helping us raise money, especially for his efforts on Sunday when both him and Mike completed a 34mile Cycle ride in 2hrs 51 minutes. Very welldone Guys, great effort and we look forward to updating the total raised once all the money has been collected. Good luck with the surgery Brian, and I've no doubt you'll be back to your usually sporting self in no time!!

Some good news is that stepping into Brian's boots (quite literally) will be Kelly's Brother, Chris Wanstall. Chris has lots of new fundraising ideas which we hope to share with you shortly and we wish him the very best of luck with his training.
