Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page, below you will find the story of our walk to Ty Hafan...

May we please take this opportunity to thank everyone for your donations, we will try to update here as much as we can. A list of walkers will be on the site very soon.

We are a collection of army wives and friends walking from Tidworth in Wiltshire to Barry in South Wales to try and raise at least £5000 for the fantastic hospice Ty Hafan in Barry.. Please take a second to visit www.tyhafan.org to see the stories behind the excellent work this hospice does.

The walk will take place on Friday 17th April through to Sunday 19th April 2009.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Ty Hafan gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

20th April 2009.....
After a few months of training, and a stunning breakfast laid on by the chefs of Lucknow bks at 7am the ladies of welsh warrior walking team finally set off from Tidworth at 8am Friday 17th April..
Spirits were high and the send off from family and friends plus all the lucknow sodexho team was fantastic.. Team picture (before we had the pain filled faces) was taken outside BHQ, and the Padre came to bless us all on our way..
Team one Julie Davis, Jodie Reader and Dai 29 set off to a nice rainy start, walked through sidbury hill to avon canal, with Dai 29 struggling to keep up with the girls they made their 8 mile trek in 1hr 40min. Meanwhile on team 2 Victoria Maloney, Liz Broadway and Dave Crimmins set off from Bradford on Avon from a lovely scenic canal front, of course that was until we turned a corner up a footway to britains steepest hill.. With lungs hangin out of us we made it to the top and jogged out the pain for about half a mile.
Julie handed over to the next team who had been lost by Melvin "maureen" Griffiths in some farm somewhere in Devizes for about ten minutes. Julie and Jodie tired Dai out so much that Petra Swift and Sarah Clayton did their 8mile leg alone.. Liz and Vicki handed over to Paula Macarthur and Kath Huggins and Corrine Carter, who took Dave on a second run..
Meanwhile in Cardiff city centre Eleanor "lettuce" Dixon, Tracey Reader, Justine Wadley and Samantha Matthews were trying to tempt the public into putting pennies in their buckets.. However Tracey had the public thinking she was selling umbrella's as Eleanor had stood beside her with an open brolly and Tracey had 2 spare still in the packet in her hand.. She thought about charging for them but directed the nice lady to the shop she got them from.. Amidst all the rain they did a fantastic job at raising £170.. Covering their own 8 miles up and down Queen street Cardiff.
On team 1 after Petra and Sarah ran into their finish line, James Swift and Petra's kids were there to help them finish, they handed over to Sian Beacon and Sophie Pyle who dragged Dai 29 with them.. Sian and Dai found it soo easy they were admiring the scenery on route.
On team two Paula, Kath and Corrine handed over then to Melinda Bryenton-Rochard, Dawn Morrissey and Carole (with an e) Whitbread and Simon Day... melinda is a very experienced walker so kept a good pace which broke our medic Simon, the walkers were so fast that poor Simon was left behind shouting heeeeelllpp but no one heard him so he walked in pain back to the meeting point..
Cpl Paul (fugee mile) Fuge then met with us to take Jo Crimmins and Jane (with a Y) Palmer to cover their leg.. They made it back safe with Pauls map reading to hand back over again to Dave, Vicki and Liz, Who walked through the roughest area in Bristol st pauls as fast as our feet could take us.. All the stop the war signs and anti army advertisements we were unusually quiet as we stupidly wore COMBATS...
After this we handed over again to Corrine, Paula Kath and Paul Fuge, who covered "the Fuge mile".. Paul still swears he didn't get lost lol..
At this point we had Dave Jo and Jane cover their second leg and it took us to the bridge to meet the rest of team 1 to walk the bridge together :)
Meanwhile after Sian and Sophie handed over to Dereynn Beacon and Stacey Reader again with poor Dai, they set off for their 8 mile set in great spirits, that is untill Dereynn realised she had no cigarettes, so she asked a passer by how far to a pub that was the meeting point, when they said 3 miles Dereynn then went into a lack of nicotine frenzy... Poor Dai almost didn't make it back as dereynn wanted to rip his head off because of her lack of nicotine..
She finally got back to a stunning packet of Lambert and Butler lights and handed over to Sandra Wynne and Rita Guy, who window licked soooo long that they could only cover 4 miles instead of the 8 miles the rest of the girls had covered they were even kind enough to give Dai a break and read their own map.. This also brought team one to the bridge to join team two..
All the girls got together to tell tales of pain and fear of the severn bridge.. Julie being the most scared of the bridge and its height she still managed to run the length of it being Mrs Julie (david bailey) Davies she had to take at least 50 pictures of everyones fear lol.. Kath led the speed of the girls as she was also scared of the bridge... She was stopping for no one lol
Getting to the end of the bridge was the most fantastic feeling, we thought we were only jumping on our transport to take us to bed, instead we had the most welcoming committee of comrades of the Newport Branch (our extended family), welcoming us with a big box of Worthers originals...
Off we went then to get fed watered and cleaned up for bed.. All the girls were in their PJ's in the accommodation when we were informed that the old comrades were waiting for us in the Sgt's mess at Maindy Bks.. We girls were too lazy to get changed so off we went in our PJ's Kath in her Kong foo suit to share a pint with our very own war hero's... Many stories were told about the war of course and by 10.45pm we were all ready to go to bed..
Day two was pretty much the same covering the miles from the Severn bridge to Newport road Cardiff.. Apart from when Dereynn had shin splints and asked the PTI Ieuan (NEIL) Humphries to stretch her legs out, i think this was the biggest orgasm Dereynn has had in her life lol.. All day she kept beggin poor Ieuan to please stretch her out again...
We then all joined together at Newport road and walked the complete milage from Cardiff to Sully, Barry.. All the way through Cardiff city centre it was the first time Dave had seen 25 women walk straight past Marks and Spencers and Primark without going in lol
We were all hurting so much that everytime someone said "Ooooooohhhhhh", we had all the girls shouting back "Whats Occurrin"!!!!!
Finally we seen the finish, the boys ran on to let us come up to Ty Hafan alone... Family and friends were waiting at the gates of Ty Hafan one of them was little Owain Macarthur, it was his birthday so all 25 girls started singing happy birthday as we walked toward him..
Shenkin the Goat and Joe the goat major met us and led us up the last 100 metres, to which we had the most amazing reception from Ty Hafan.. They had the most lush cups of tea i've ever had.. Also donuts Danish and biscuits and cakes... They were fantastic.. Ty Hafan have a wall of fame which famous people including prince Charles have put their hand print on to and signed.. We had the honor of also putting our hands on it.. We had a beautiful little girl in a polka dress painting our hands so we could stick them to the wall then sign it... (see pics)
Thank you ery much to all the girls who took part in the walk and also the guys who supported us, Melvin (maureen) griffiths, Paul (fugee mile) fuge, Simon( i hate feet) Day, Ieuan (Neil) Humpfries also a big thank you to David (taff) Beacon who kept us covered by Media the whole way.. A special thanks goes to Dave Crimmins and dai 29 also our QM Major Dixon who without we couldnt have covered all the background work like accomodation food and of course "dixi and Spencers" for our combats.. To Jo Crimmins for the fab T-shirts and A company for our fantastic company Tshirts.. A big thank you to the Mercians who donated the use of their mini bus.. We'll see you in May when we have our last wives exercise with you..
None of this would have happened if it wasn't for the idea that came to Julie (david Bailey) Davies... Thank you Julie it was a fab idea and brought us all together for a crackin weekend...

I would like to thank two ladys who has been doing alot behind the scene and also had the time to help us do the walk, i would like to give you both a big thank because if it was'nt for you two i would have never have pulled this walk off. Liz broadway and Dereynn beacon you are simply the best thank you so much for being there when i needed you julie davies.x

Sadly, thousands of families in Wales live every day knowing their child’s life will be short. At the moment, they often face this without any care or support. Alone. Afraid. Isolated. Tŷ Hafan’s ambition is that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own.
