The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.

Story

As with most years, I tend to have something I want to do and this year is no exception! This year I am going to be white water rafting down the Zambezi in aid of Guide Dogs for the blind. Last year I took part in the Great North run which was fun for Guide Dogs and due to their fantastic support, I wish to support them again. (I am paying for my own flights on this trip).

Guide Dogs for the Blind recieve no government funding but rely totally on voluntary donations, providing an invaluable service for blind and partially sighted people, by giving them the freedom and independance that a guide dog gives them.

They support 4,700 guide dog partnerships in the UK and the cost of each dog to it's new owner is a nominal 50p to ensure no one is prevented from having one due to lack of money.

It costs £10 a day to support a guide dog and with your help blind and partially sighted people will be able to lead a more independent life which we all take for granted.

A few details of the cost for each dog is as follows:

£60 - Buys a harness, handle, collar & bell

£100 - Provides four long canes

£250 - Feeds a guide dog for a year

£600 - Provides training for one visually impaired person

£1000 - Supports the basic training of a guide dog

£3,650 - Supports a working guide dog partnership for one year

This charity has alway has a pull on me. Ok, it could be the adorable dogs and the cute puppies but its also might be to do with seeing the relationship between a guide dog and their owners and how important they are to each other. Guide dogs make such an amazing difference to people that have them. I just want to give more people that opportunity.

I know giving is a pain but even just a £1 can make a diiference.

My balloon race and car boot has now taken place. Now I'm just waiting to see whos went the furthest. It was a great day and the balloons seem to have gone in the direction of Northampton!
