Two Army Medics based in Strensall will begin a coast to coast cycle ride this Sunday (2 October 2011) to raise funds for Martin House Children’s Hospice in York. Staff Sergeant William McLeish (41) and Sergeant Chris Wilson (32) from 2 Medical Brigade will begin their journey at Ravenglass and finish at South Shields, covering a total of 186 miles in four days. The duo are undertaking the Hadrian’s Wall challenge to accumulate as much money as possible for the Hospice, which cares for children and young people of all ages with progressive life limiting illnesses, and provides vital support to their families. SSgt McLeish, who comes from Dunning in Perthshire, has been in the Army for 18 years. He said: “We have raised around £1300 so far, but our target is £3000. Martin House relies heavily on donations and fundraising to provide vital care and support for so many local children and their families. We would be extremely grateful for any support from the public to help meet our goal.” Sgt Wilson, from South Shields said the support so far has been overwhelming: “three of the local supermarkets allowed us to conduct collections at their stores. Highland Spring also offered to supply us with water for the event. “We are shocked at people’s generosity but so thankful that they realise what a worthwhile and charitable cause this is.” The medics will finish their challenge on Wednesday 5 October 2011.
