I'm pleased to report that on Saturday 16th October myself and 5 of my Uppingham school mates completed the 24.5 mile circular walk, ascended 5,000 ft and made approximately 65,315 increasingly tired steps to climb and walk "The 3 Yorkshire Peaks"; Pen-y-ghent, Whernside & Ingleborough in c 10 hours. We're all aching and none of us are rushing back to do it again despite the beautiful weather and breathtaking scenery!  Why did we do it? We are great friends and wanted to do something for some good causes.....hence tapping you up for some money for 4 worthy charities; Cancer Research UK, Hope & Homes for Children, The British Heart Foundation & Help for Heroes. Here's why:-

Every 2 minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer, with your help Cancer Research UK can help more people survive.

My wife Sam lost her mother & two sisters to a genetic heart disorder. The BHF work tirelessly to identify reasons for heart disease and defects such as the faulty gene that caused Sam, her Dad & her brother their tragic loss. Through the BHF my dear Nan had 10 more wonderful years with us thanks to the skills of heart surgeons in repairing her aortic anaerism.

 

My Father's Army career took him to Bosnia & Africa where he witnessed at first hand the institutions that orphaned children were being brought up in as a result of conflict & famine. Hope & Homes work to place children in loving families, not state run institutions & give the child the best possible chance to rebuild their life.

 

We are all moved by the courage displayed by our Armed Forces and our brave servicemen & women that pay the ultimate price with either their lives or through incurring the most horrendous injuries in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Help for Heroes provides support for our wounded servicemen and woman on their return from these conflicts.
