2018 is the 200th anniversary of the Sailors' Society and I am helping them raise money as they help the invisible workforce of 1.6 million seafarers on the world's oceans.

It is not an easy life at sea facing isolation, violent storms and piracy. Many of these men and women are from the world's most deprived communities and use seafaring as a path out of poverty. The Sailors' Society provides a personal lifeline for seafarers.

In aid of the charity this year I will be running through some of the most dangerous countries in the world. Starting with a 10km race in Somalia in February, taking in a 52 mile ultra in Hampshire, UK in June (OK, so not all of them are in dangerous places!) and culminating in October with the Marathon of Afghanistan.

Money raised will go towards a range of the Society's activities such as:

• reuniting families after disasters at sea
• helping traumatised seafarers readjust to life at home
• counselling crew during ordeals and providing practical support to them and their families
• assisting seafarers to communicate with loved ones with phone cards, WiFi, apps, etc.

• £15 could help provide a blanket, woolly hat and gloves for a seafarer
  
• £30 could help to fund a chaplain for a day to visit seafarers in port
• £50 could help with a grant towards a family's emergency and medical needs
