AMBER IS CYCLING JOHN O'GROATS TO LANDS END TO RAISE MONEY FOR ATAXIA UK

About my challenge

In October my friend IanRichards and I shall be cycling John O'Groats to Lands End unsupported.  I am doing this to raise money for Ataxia UK.  Ian is fundraising separately for Help for Heroes & Macmillan Cancer Support.

For those of you who know me a bit, you might think that any kind of sporting challenge isn't really much of a challenge for a personal trainer.  For those of you who know me well, you'll know that until last Christmas I didn't even own a bike.  And since then I have been out on said mountain bike about 4 times - usually for a grand total of 5 miles.  In short - cycling is not my forte!

Now equipped with a super-dooper new road bike I shall be embarking on a journey along the entire length of the UK, totalling approximately 900 miles, burning over 50,000 calories, ascending a total of 37,000ft (8,000ft higher than Everest), and turning my pedals 1/4 of a million times!  If any of you saw the Sport Relief cycle ride you'll know how gruelling this journey is going to be!

We'll be setting off from John O'Groats on Monday 4th October and hope to arrive at Lands End 12 days later.  We'll be averaging roughly 80 miles per day (with slightly shorter first and last days).  I'm not being completely hardcore - we'll be staying in B&Bs / hotels rather than camping, but we are doing the ride unsupported i.e. no vehicle travelling with us to carry our stuff.  So we'll have all our changes of clothes / food / water / spare inner tubes / tool kits etc in panniers on our bikes.  Groan!  Somebody remind me why I'm doing this again?  Ah yes....

About Ataxia

Ataxia is a degenerative, neurological condition which affects movement, balance and speech.  Like many little-known charities, one of Ataxia UK's priorities is to raise awareness of the condition as well as researching and developing treatments.  Currently there is no cure for Ataxia.

I have chosen to support this charity as my Grandfather was diagnosed with Ataxia a couple of years ago and so this charity has huge personal significance.

100% of your sponsorship will go directly to the charity as I shall not be using sponsorship money to fund this trip.  All costs (bike, gear, accommodation, travel, food) will be from my own pocket.  I'd like Ataxia UK to receive as much money as possible so I'd be massively grateful for any contributions.

Ataxia UK is a registered charity (no.1102391)
