We’re the UK’s leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis. Right now, over 500,000 people in the UK are living with a lifelong disease that many people have never heard of. We’re working to improve diagnosis and treatment; to fund research and to raise awareness.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This year I have decided to skydive, 13,500ft, in aid of the charity Crohn's and Colitis UK. This fundraiser is dedicated and inspired by Chloe Denman. I have had the honour of being best friends with this incredible woman for 18 years and these past few years have really shown me her strength, courage and will power.

On May 19th 2017, Chloe was diagnosed with Crohn's. Crohn's is a form of inflammatory bowel disease which affects 1 in 4 people. Around 300,000 people have Crohn's or Colitis, it is evidently a disease that affects many more people than we realise. Inflammatory bowel disease can cause ulceration and inflammation in the digestive system, in Chloe's case, 20cm of her intestines are affected. This inflammation can cause; abdominal pain, diarrhoea, depression, weight loss, mouth ulcers, joint pain and fatigue. I have unfortunately seen many of these symptoms in my best friend and I can honestly say that it is painful to watch.

This diagnosis is life changing and currently has no cure. The possible causes are genes and an abnormal reaction by the immune system to bacteria in the gut. This illness is highly over-looked and un-appreciated. Until my best friend was diagnosed, I didn't realise the extent of which the illness can affect people’s lives.

In Chloe's case, her treatment includes having regular infusions at the hospital every 8 weeks. Restrictions on the food she can eat, such as not being able to eat red meat, due to its reaction to her illness. She suffers from abdominal pain and mouth ulcers, which can make any mundane task very difficult. All of these things, big and small, can make the basis of life difficult. Therefore, the aim of this skydive is not only to raise money to donate to the charity that help reduce peoples pain and continue to research for a cure, its primary aim is to raise awareness of the issue.

Chloe Denman is one of the strongest people I've ever had the pleasure to know. I've watched her grow a tremendous amount since her diagnosis and as a friend, I honestly couldn't feel more proud.

Hopefully, one day we will have a cure. Remember, not all illnesses are clear to see.

The skydive itself is on July 27th, at Langar airfield Nottingham, it’s going to involve a small gathering to support myself and Chloe and speak about the illness, therefore all are welcome to join! Any donations are immensely appreciated, as I have to raise a minimum of £400 to jump, however if you can't donate, please just educate yourself and those around you.
