BAUDER THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE TO RAISE MONEY FOR NACC
After successfully completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks last year, myself and a few other mad colleagues thought that we would not stop there and we would attempt the full National Three Peaks Challenge. This entails climbing and walking the three highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scarfell) and Wales (Snowdon) with 24 hours including the driving time in between.
We are doing this over the May Bank Holiday weekend starting at approximately 4pm on Sunday and finishing hopefully well before 4pm on the Bank Holiday Monday (no pressure then!)
As we had decided to do the challenge we thought about which charity we could raise funds for. It was my idea to raise money for NACC. NACC stands for the National Association for Colitis and Crohns. The reason I am keen to raise money for them is personal. You may or may not be aware that I have Crohns Disease along with my father. It is not supposed to be hereditary but there is a high chance that over time my children may also suffer. I regard myself as a mild sufferer although those close to me may disagree. In the past 6 months I have had three hospital admissions to help me deal with my Crohns. It is something that you have to learn to live with but can be very intrusive in everyday life.
A little about Crohns - Crohns is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which lasts a life time and for which there is no cure. It can strike at any age but most commonly begins in childhood, teenage years or as a young adult. I was diagnosed at 22 (14 years ago). I am not alone: around 240,000 people in the UK have this condition. Symptoms include severe acute pain, diarrhea, bleeding, exhaustion, eye, skin and joint problems and with children it can impair growth and development. The condition therefore can be devastating to school, work and home life.
NACC (www.nacc.org.uk) is the major UK charity offering help and support to people affected by Crohns. It was established in 1979 as a partnership between patients, families, friends and the health care professionals caring for them. NACC services include helplines, a website and information leaflets/factsheets. NACC also raises awareness, campaigns for improved health care and funds vital research into helping the disease sufferers.
It would be fantastic if you could support me and my colleagues in this challenge and help me raise greatly needed funds for NACC. Wish me luck and thank you for taking the time to read this. Hopefully you will now contribute as much as you can by sponsoring me.
