Story

Hi there

I first saw details of this sponsored ride in the Observer back in November, 2009. I've never really done anything serious for charity so felt it was my time to give something back. I love cycling (though it doesn't make me particularly good - just see the photo above and make up your own mind...) and thought this was a real challenge for me in terms of my own fitness and endurance whilst raising some money for a fantastic cause.

I'm now less than three weeks away from the ride and am working really hard at my training - hopefully the latest photo (see above) shows I've made some progress since the original was posted. The weather's been lovely the last few weeks and makes it much easier to put in the hard miles than when it's raining. But don't believe it when people say Cheshire is flat though, as it simply isn't!

I've been cross country to Nantwich today, and back via Beeston Castle and Tattenhall. Really beautiful countryside and a truly uplifting 50 miles into the bargin. Off to get the carbs (pasta!) in now and thank you so much to everyone who's supported me - it's an enormous motivator!

Why support MAG?

Imagine if, somewhere outside your front door, there is a powerful explosive weapon waiting patiently for you, or a member of your family, to disturb it. Because it’s hidden from view, avoiding it is a constant game of chance.

There could be one of them. There could be 100. You don’t know how many there are and neither does anyone else.

Every day millions of people live with this fear. And every day dozens of people die or suffer horrific injuries from abandoned weapons left behind after conflict.

Landmines, grenades, missiles and cluster bombs do not discriminate between soldiers and civilians, between adults and children.

Did you know...?

  • * More than 70 states are believed to be affected by mines
  • * At least 25 states are affected by uncleared submunitions
  • * Explosions in poorly managed ammunition storage areas killied and injured many hundreds of people in 2007 and 2008, contaminating previously safe land
  • * More than a third of central Vietnam is still contaminated by unexploded ordnance

  • * Nearly 100,000 households in Burundi are thought to possess small arms and light weapons, increasing the risk of a return to conflict at a time of ongoing political

About the charity

Every single day, 15 people are killed or injured because of landmines and other explosive weapons. Half of all civilian casualties are children. MAG finds and destroys these weapons to save lives and rebuild futures; helping people to grow crops, attend school and build homes.
