We Raise Awareness of Kawasaki Disease to help protect tiny hearts!

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In August 2022, Christian became ill with Kawasaki Disease. This was an incredibly tough time for us as new parents, but more so for Christian who was only 8 months old at the time. He was incorrectly diagnosed on many visits to the hospital and it was only an eagle-eyed GP who correctly diagnosed him with Kawasaki. We're so lucky that he was diagnosed at what we now know to be an early stage, which enabled him to get the treatment he needed and prevent any long-lasting effects to his heart.

Kawasaki Disease is a type of vasculitis. It is increasingly common in the UK with about 1,000 children admitted to hospital with Kawasaki Disease each year. It mainly affects young children but it can affect people of any age – and its impact can be most serious in the very young, particularly infants (babies under 12 months of age).  Identified in 1967 in Japan by Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki, the cause of Kawasaki Disease is still unknown.  Kawasaki Disease presents with several symptoms common to a variety of other childhood diseases and infections and is therefore often misdiagnosed. Kawasaki Disease is a serious disease which if untreated can cause coronary artery damage – and life long heart disease.

Anything that you can donate will be greatly appreciated so that the money can be used by Societi- The UK Foundation for Kawasaki Disease, who can continue to raise awareness for Parents and their families.

About the charity

Kawasaki disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the UK and the western world. It's time we changed that. We have an enormous task to do. But we are going to do it. TOGETHER we will. Join us and help us protect tiny hearts. You can make a difference. Awareness of this often pernicious disease is currently poor. Slow diagnosis and delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease can cause serious, life-long health issues. Children affected by Kawasaki Disease have excellent chances of a good recovery with timely diagnosis and the correct treatment. At Societi we know that recognising Kawasaki Disease early is THE transformational opportunity to prevent what can be devastating effects from Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease has lots of symptoms in common with other childhood illnesses so it is often misdiagnosed - this means lifelong heart damage for too many children. Each year in the UK there are more cases of Kawasaki Disease than bacterial meningitis! Everyone would spot meningitis and know what to do, because of brilliant awareness raising work by MRT. We need everyone to recognise Kawasaki Disease too.
