Story
This time it’s even more personal
Daniel is my Grandson and he would like to walk before his 7th birthday. He was born 10 weeks early and has cerebral palsy. His difficulty with moving independently may - may! - be overcome with an operation called SDR; but this will cost a lot of money. Our daughter and son-in-law are seeking to raise £55,000 to take this forwards.
I’m pedalling in October from Croydon to Broadmayne, a village a few miles east of Dorchester – “From Grandy to Grandpa”, those being two of Daniel’s grandfathers (i.e. me; and Simon’s Dad Jeremy).
I’d normally hope to cover 150 miles or so in two days – but this year isn’t normal, I don’t normally have my gall-bladder taken out via major abdominal surgery. My fitness level has crashed with my lack of exercise, so this ride will be a real challenge, whatever the weather.
The last time I did anything like this was riding in 2009 to Paris in four days for Action Medical Research (who wanted to fund research into premature birth, hence my by-line “This time it’s personal”). I was asked to raise a net £600 and with your help made £2700.
Four-and-a-half times my target really got me emotional about peoples’ generosity (it still does) – but this time it’s not for “research”, it’s for Daniel, who is a bright, lovable, intelligent youngster – but one who can’t walk. He’s my Grandson – so this time it’s even more emotional.
I’ve set my target this time at £2750; that’s a mere 5% of the overall target, which is quite humbling ...
Do log on to http://www.onebigstepfordaniel.co.uk/ to see a lot more about this appeal - and do, please!, be generous. Please. Daniel will never walk unless we raise a massive £55,000 – my bit is merely pedal 150 miles and I’m relying on you to do your bit to help to raise 5% of that.
Thank you
Andy
