Story

Hi there. Thank you for visiting my Just Giving Page.

My name is Andy Taylor. I have been selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in The World Transplant Games in Perth, Australia in April 2023.

I have been selected for Badminton and will also compete in Table Tennis

I am honoured, humbled and excited to have been selected.

am competing to honour my anonymous  donor and their family and to raise awareness of organ donation and the importance of registering on the Donor Register.

The World Transplant Games is a celebration of the life-changing, life-saving gift of a transplant.

The World Transplant Games take place every two years and are supported by the International Olympic Committee. In Perth there will be over 1,000 other transplant athletes and live donors competing in over 17 sporting events from 60 countries across the globe.

Every athlete has to self-fund their own travel, accommodation, registration costs etc. If you could spare even a small amount to assist with these costs I would be so grateful. All money raised goes directly to Transplant Sport UK. Transplant Sport UK will reimburse me only for my costs directly related to my competing at the Games. Any surplus funds will go towards the Transplant Sport UK Management Team (including physios and coaches) who give up their time to support the team.

A Transplant is a Magical Combination of Love and Science.

I received a Kidney and Liver transplant in 2016 – both were needed due to a hereditary condition. I was in hospital for 10 weeks after the transplant operation and need physiotherapy to re-gain the strength to walk again. I could not be discharged until I could walk up a flight of stairs. Prior to that I was on dialysis for 2 years – attached to a dialysis machine 5 hours a day, 3 time a week.

I have always played racquet sports. Competing in the British Transplant Games was one of my recovery goals. I was fortunate to win Gold in Men’s Badminton at the British Transplant Games in 2019 and 2022 and in the European Transplant Games in 2022. I can’t wait for Perth and my first World Transplant Games!!

I am grateful everyday to the wonderful people at the NHS and most importantly for the decision and generosity of my donor and their family.

Transplants Save Lives! Transplants Transform Lives!

I know money is tight at the moment. Even if you cannot spare any pennies, please take the time to discuss your transplant wishes with your family and loved ones. Its so important to share your wishes. I was fortunate and received my donated organs after only 2 years on the waiting list. Some will wait longer and some in need of a transplant may not receive one in time.

You can register your wishes on The NHS Organ Donor Register - 0300 123 2323  www.organdonationnhs.uk

Thank you for reading my story.
