Story
Hi Everyone
On the 21st June I will start my epic ride from London to Paris, packing in over 100 miles a day for 3 days and this is why I'm doing it...
Some of you may (or may not) know that after graduating I spent some time in Malawi as a volunteer. As part of that, I was placed in a small village called Likhubula where I taught a class of 40 kids ranging from ages 11-18 at the local Primary school Nansato. This was an average class size for the higher grades, however, unfortunately there was no nursery care for the younger kids, just lots of unoccupied children.
During my experience I met a very inspirational girl called Paula Scott who was a teacher back in Scotland. Although she too taught the elder kids, from the early days she started planning on how she could resolve the nursery situation.
Paula's vision included giving employment to local people, providing care, education and one nourishing meal a day to children in their pre-school year and since our time in Malawi she has not stopped working to honour that commitment.
Nansato Nursery Trust has now been operating for over 6 years, has 4 Nursery's up and running and has had over 1500 children through their doors! As 25% of children in Malawi are orphans, Paula (and her husband) believed this is where they could make a difference hence giving focus to these kids has allowed them to keep the class sizes down to approx 70-80 kids ensuring they get good quality teaching and at least one meal a day.
However, to allow this amazing charity to continue, it needs continual support.
The annual running costs of the project is around £9000.
This covers:
- Staff Wages
- Food for the Children
- Maintenance Costs
- Resources for schools
- Travel for representatives of the trust
The Malawians are a very humble nation who welcomed me into their community during my stay. It's overdue but now time to give something back. Please dig deep and help me do that.
