Story

This is the story of why Angela, Pred, Carol, Kelly & Eilir decided to do a charity Skydive.

Who’s who: Kelly is the daughter of Carol, who is the sister of Angela, who is married to Pred,
who is the brother of Eilir. Got it?

We always thought there’d be nothing in this world that could get us to jump out of a
plane. And then we met cancer.

All five of us have lost people very dear to us through cancer: friends, an aunt, a mother, a father. All were looked after by a wonderful and dedicated team in a hospice who gave
our loved ones dignity and peace in the end stages of their lives. For this we are truly grateful and for some time we have wanted to give something back.

Then, when John Hornby (Carol & Angela’s father, Kelly’s grandfather) was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May, this called for some serious action. We realised that if we
really meant business, we’d have to step up to the challenge. In fact, we’d
have to fly up to 10,000 feet and throw ourselves out of a plane, free-fall for
5,000 feet, and hope that the parachute brings us safely down through the last
5,000 feet, to show we really mean business.

We came across Dorothy House Hospice Care and discovered they do amazing outreach work that enables patients to be looked after in their own home and at a time where home
is the most important place to be. We have now witnessed the incredible work they do first hand, when they helped us look after John during his last days. Because of their support John was able to be in his home, surrounded by his family, which was his last wish. We could not have coped during these terrible days if it was not for the wonderful Carers from Dorothy House.

It’s a common misconception that hospices are funded by the NHS, but Dorothy House receives only around 30% of its funding from the NHS, and therefore needs all our help to
continue its amazing work.

This skydive is now in memory of John Hornby. Please dig deep to help Dorothy House continue their incredible work so that other families may have the same support in their hours of need.
