Story
WHAT? This summer I am going to be spending 10 weeks volunteering for Kenya Education Partnerships (KEP) in a rural secondary school in south west Kenya.
AIM? To improve secondary education opportunities for young people in rural Kenya.
HOW? A co– project worker and I will be working in direct partnership with the staff, students and governors of a school, trying to build its capacity for delivering a sustainable and good quality education. Focusing on addressing HIV/AIDS awareness and gender inequalities as well as increasing enrolment will hopefully lead to long term benefits for the school, but to ensure good quality education is achieved we need to invest in essential resources!
In order to do this we will be raising £2100 throughout the year in the UK. Exactly how it is spent will depend on the individual school, but will probably include investment in resources such as books, libraries and science equipment.
WHY? Education is a one of the most powerful ways to bring about positivie change and the impact of a good quality education, both economically and socially, on an individual and the community cannot be overestimated. Despite this, less than half of young Kenyans are in secondary schools. Figures are especially bad in both rural areas and regarding female enrolment. Better resources and raising the profile of the school will definitely help improve this immediately!
WHAT CAN I DO? Any donation would be hugely appreciated! Here is an idea of some numbers:
£3 will buy a text book for the school..
£50 will stock a classroom with science equipment...
£100 will pay for materials and labour to build a mini library...
KEP is an outstanding and very experienced student run not-for-profit organisation, so rest assured your money will be well spent! I will also be able to let you know in October the progress made in our school over the summer courtesy of your donations.
So please give generously and invest in the opportunities this will bring about!
