Story
This Boxing Day I’ll be running off my festive hangover up the infamous 11k Chevin Chase in aid of Abortion Support Network.
The Eighth may have been repealed in Ireland, paving the way for the legalisation of abortion in some circumstances and parliament is making baby steps to call on decriminalisation of abortion across the UK including Northern Ireland. Despite this, there’s still a long way to go until this becomes a reality for women in Ireland and Northern Ireland meaning thousands of women are still having to travel to England to access safe abortion care at a great emotional and financial cost.
Abortion Support Network provides financial assistance and accommodation to women travelling from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. They also provide confidential, non-judgmental information to anyone who is seeking information about travelling to England for an abortion.
1 in 3 women will have an abortion in their lifetime, yet discussing reproductive rights is almost something of a taboo and holds a stigma. Taboo leads to silence, and silence won’t make a change. After the last few months, it feels like a weight has been lifted talking about my experiences and I’m proud to have begun talking about it publicly and politically.
I urge you show solidarity with our sisters in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Please donate if you can, Abortion Support Network do amazing work and help women in what is a very vulnerable time.
