Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On the 7th to the 11th July Will Goring and Will Asher are going to make the 300 mile journey to Paris from London. This bike ride is something that we have wanted to do for some time to show our appreciation for Macmillan Cancer Support.  They are an amazing charity who offers unconditional support to a patient and their family. Please read our stories, Cancer affects many peoples live across the UK not only ours so please donate as much as you can so that Macmillan can continue there great work.

People who know me (Will Goring the bigger one) will know that the last 18 months have been difficult to say the least, its not all been bad but for the most part unfortunately it has.  In May 2008 we were told that my dad (Bob Goring) had cancer, something you hope you will never have to deal with but for us it was the start of a fight.  I faced my dad’s illness with the attitude that this was not going to beat us or my dad.  As a family we stuck together throughout all operations, chemo sessions and radiotherapy treatments always assisted by nurses from Macmillan who would pop round to check up on us.  n May 2009 we were given the news that Dads cancer had spread and was no longer operable, this as you can imagine was a massive blow.  However we set out again with the same frame of mind occasionally cracking the joke “built to go through it now round it”.  He was so strong, gutsy, stubborn and brave, never giving up or showing how poorly he was.  Dad passed away in October in the Macmillan unit at the Derby City Hospital.  The unit volunteers, nurses and doctors were second to none always there for us all every step of the way.  I know this bike ride is going to be a physical and mental challenge but for me this is just one way of saying thank you to everyone that supported and continues to support my family.  This ride is for dad as well, to show him the pride I have for how he conducted his self throughout the last 18 months.

Well its hard to describe the reasons for doing this ride without mentioning what has already been said. I (WIll Asher the smaller one) have been a very close friend of Gorin's since the first year of Uni and ever since then we have been almost un-separable. However living in South Yorkshire tends to have its downsides, but its one of very few I might add. So if you assumed I knew his Dad and the relationship he and his family shared you would be right and the news has saddened us all, but left us with a loving memory. I was with Will for every-step of the way when it came to treatment, operations and his eventual passing. I always imagined that should this be me I would want a support to lean on when things became too much and I gladly supported Will and his family when required. (I may add that the late nights in the bars of Derby were some of the hardest times, trying to remember where Will lives has been a problem for me since our friendship began.) So it seemed only fitting that I too took this one last trip side by side with Will as we both shared this journey that will no doubt change both our lives for the better, but more importantly change other peoples lives forever. I too have shared the loss of close family and friends due to this terrible disease, my Grandad passed recently which was also a difficult time, and this ride is a way to remember them in a way that i hope would make them proud. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't remember those that are no longer with us and I suppose this ride is my statement that I do remember and will never forget. I am a great believer in helping others and seeing the support that the Goring's received from this great charity, I would like to see others benefit from this charity too.

Any charity that works towards easing the suffering and pain of patients and their families effected by cancer is worth the mental and physical pain that we will need to endure to achieve this most prestigious challenge. I will gladly Ride this distance in the comforting knowledge that other Families, like my good friend Will's family, will be comforted and supported in their time of need.

So please dig deep and give generously because I can assure you this is not going to be fun but it is for a very good cause and will change someones life.

We would like to send a special thank you to Homebase, Kingsway Retail Park who allowed us to collect and raise a massive £380. We would also like to thank Jack Walker who donated a massive £200 cheque laste week.
