Story

I have decided to go all out again and put in everything i have and push myself to the limit in the training for 8 weeks, I will be attending 31 sessions in this time as well as doing extra in the gym and running. It’s going to take a lot of will power and a monumental effort to fit this in to my already packed weekly schedule, it will all be worth it I’m sure on the night of the final event! I can honestly say it was extremely tough last time and now I’m 5 years older it’s going to be even tougher, but I’ve never been in such great shape and thought clearer in my life and that’s what I need again. In my eyes there is no better way to start the year than keeping fit, eating healthy, no alcohol which will continue from January through to the end of March!! Dad turning 60 seemed the perfect opportunity to do something for this amazing charity that have helped him so much over the past 10 years. Everyone knows that dad is my hero and I appreciate everything he has done for me throughout my life, so this is a show of appreciation back big man.

Since dads stroke and diagnoses of cadasil his mobility,  memory and ability to communicate has worsened over the years, it’s incredibly sad for all to see him go from such a hard working, sporty, happy go lucky bloke to how he is today. We are so thankful to headway where he visits every Friday, they have helped him massively socialising with others with similar brain injuries and interacting with everybody. The range of activities always keeps them all smiling and happier.

Just a brief description of what cadasil actually is, CADASIL (also known as cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy) is a rare inherited disorder that occurs when the thickening of the walls of small- and medium-sized blood vessels blocks the flow of blood to the brain. This can cause more strokes and increases chances of dementia.

About the charity

We provide specialist services across Gloucestershire for people with acquired brain injuries, their partners, families, friends and carers. This means supporting people as they adjust to the physical, psychological, economic and social changes that can be brought about through an acquired brain injury. Our Enablement Service is centre based and open every weekday offering activities that focus on the five elements of rehabilitation: This takes the form of a structured timetable so that survivors can select the activities that help them work towards their goals. Our Individual Support Service is designed to meet individual needs, abilities and preferences with a focus on supporting survivors, their families and carers to come to terms with the changed circumstances brought about by brain injury.
