Story

Hi, I'm Bonnie Shortcake, a ten year old Collie x Corgi girl, who came into the care of Oldies Club, a volunteer-run dog rescue charity, after there were problems with another dog in my previous home. I was quite badly injured, but recovered well.

February 2014 ~ update ~ Thank you very much to everyone who has donated towards my vet bills. After being looked after in my lovely foster home, I have now been adopted into my forever home!

                                             ***********
Oldies Club has faced vet bills of over £988 for me to date, due to various health problems, as detailed below. If you are able to make a donation to help with these costs, we would be very grateful. Despite all these worries, I am a happy girl now that I've settled into my foster home and I enjoy playing and long walks. I love to be the centre of attention and don't like to be left alone very long. I am very happy to accompany my fosterers on any dog-friendly outings.

Shortly after arriving in Oldies Club foster care, it became apparent that I had an eye infection. The vet diagnosed an ulcer and prescribed antibiotic drops and a painkiller for me. I will spare you the detailed information, but it was a rather unpleasant experience :-(

I have also been suffering from a cough and as the vet was concerned it could be bronchitis or lungworm causing the problem, I had to be sedated for an x-ray, so my lungs could be checked and a sample taken. I have also suffered from sickness and upset tummy and worries, for which I have had vet treatment and a prescription diet.

Thankfully, my eye has improved greatly. The vet advised that there is likely to always be a scar, but I can see well from the eye.

I was due to have a dental too, but this had to be postponed as I was still coughing and had started wheezing too. I had a further x-ray towards the end of 2013, which revealed lesions in my lungs, which could have been the result of kennel cough, or could be due to chronic bronchitis :-( I was placed on further antibiotics to target that area, for several weeks.

Oldies Club received the results of my sputum test just before Christmas. The infection was confirmed as bronchitis and it started clearing up, with the help of antibiotics.

However, the sample also showed that this is only a secondary infection. The primary cause was narrowed down to three possibilities, in descending order of likeliness: 1) parasitic infection, most likely, lung worm 2) neoplasia or 3) allergies. The vet put me on a three week course of treatment for lungworm. My fosterers advised that the cough was improving daily and the vet confirmed the secondary infection had cleared up and was pleased with my progress :-)

My fosterers told Oldies Club that I am getting more lively by the moment, so it appears that the main cause was parasitic infection, for which I was receiving treatment. The vet has taken me off both the antibiotics, bronchial dialator and anti-inflammatories.

I am due to have my dental soon, once the vet considers that I'm ready.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I hope you will make a donation to help Oldies Club with my vet bill and share the link with your friends and family too :-)

Love, Bonnie Shortcake xxx

Please note that should Oldies Club supporters be generous enough to donate more than is needed for my vet bill, any excess money will be directed to the charity’s general fund and used to help other older dogs in its care.
