We support children with brain injuries to improve their quality of life.

Story

The Child Brain Injury Trust is the leading voluntary sector charity
providing practical and emotional support to over 8000 children each year who have suffered a brain injury - along with their parents, brothers and sisters - anybody who has been affected.

Their aim is to improve the quality of life for every child or young person and to recognise that brain injury can affect young people in very different ways to adults. Children often make great physical recoveries but have challenges with things like memory, attention and concentration, communicating, making and keeping friends and controlling their emotions and behaviour. These problems last a lifetime.

Families meanwhile are left devastated, grieving for the child they once knew and struggling to secure the support they now need.

The Child Brain Injury Trust aims to empower families as they adjust to the long term effects of a child’s brain injury. What really sets them apart from any other charity is their network of child and family support co-ordinators.

CBIT’s team of professional staff operate across the UK - and this means that, after the onset of illness or following a tragic accident - one of their network of support co-ordinators is there, in hospital, working to provide help and support right from the start. They provide practical and emotional support - starting in the major trauma unit, continuing throughout their rehabilitation, getting them back into education and into their local community. This can involve anything from getting children access to specialist equipment, providing respite days out - to ensuring teachers are properly trained to deal with an injured child’s specific needs.

But this all costs money - specifically a million pounds every year is needed for them to provide all these things - so fund raising is crucial for them to continue to grow and help more and more children.
