Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Tom Ireland, aged 17, began an apprenticeship with Blue Funnel Line.He served on SS Gleniffer during Malta and Mediterranean convoys, N African campaign, invasion of Sicily and invasion of Italy and transatlantic convoys to New York.

On SS Ascanius he was part of the Normandy invasion Fleet and Ascanius was torpedoed while bringing troops home from Normandy.

Tom remained with Blue Funnel Line after the war and furthered his education at Leith Nautical College and in 1953 he was awarded Certificate of Competency, Extra Master Mariner. F.G. Steamship.  

Tom left the sea in 1954 to become a lecturer in navigation and radar at Leith Nautical College. and married Jean Hepburn in 1955. 

Tom was appointed Master in charge of T.S. Dolphin training ship in 1965 and then became Head of Navigation and Vice Principal of Leith Nautical College in 1967. He was appointed Principal of Fleetwood Nautical College in 1975 and then Principal of Glasgow Nautical College in 1978.

Tom retired in 1987 and continued his love of the sea by sailing extensively on the west coast of Scotland.
