Story
This is the fifth Great North Run that I will have shuffled/staggered and hobbled through. I entered in 2005 to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research in honour of my mother in law, Wyn who worked hard to survive breast and bone cancer. Unfortunately she died at 62 years, absolutely furious that she had to leave so early.
As I trained for the run, in early June, my brother Robin was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Birkitts Lymphoma. He died in August a month before the run. He was 36 years old and left a devastated family including his three gorgeous girls.
The run in 2005 and every year since has been an incredibly emotional undertaking but memories of Wyn, Robin and my Dad carry me through every single mile. I have a sneaking suspicion that my Dad and brother are propping up the bar somewhere in another world giggling at my red face and knackered demeanour, while Wyn tells them off!
All donations, however small, bring the medical profession a little closer to ridding the world of a truly dreadful disease.
