Keith’s son Tom was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last July. It was a huge shock to the whole family and we have had to adjust to living with diabetes. Although with management Tom can live a normal and active life Tom’s diabetes effects us all everyday.
Tom needs at least four insulin injections a day. Unlike many medicines, insulin currently cannot be taken orally. We also have to check his blood at least six times a day and through the night if necessary. We calculate the carbohydrate and sugar content in any meal and then assess the amount of insulin needed to balance this, taking into account his level of activity. Too much insulin or exercise not balanced by carbs could induce a “low”, requiring Tom needing to take on glucose. We need to take his blood testing kit, insulin, snacks and glucose tablets on any trip out of the house.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) exists to find the cure for Type 1 Diabetes and its complications. We have chosen to support this charity not only help find a cure for diabetes, but to help find ways to make young diabetics lives easier. Daily injections can be restrictive. For Tom a simple cold or other everyday childhood illness is complicated by diabetes and can result in hospitalisation while his blood sugar is brought back under control.
Matt, Mark, Keith, Jen, Natalie and Becca are going to be walking up Snowdon in June and hopefully raising lots of money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and WAY (Widowed and Young).
We’ve got Just Giving pages for both charities and if you can sponsor us that would be wonderful.
