Story
I've never run a marathon before. I started this journey of running with The Herren Project to honor my late brother-in-law, Rusty, almost four years ago. It was a tumultuous time for me and my family and in many cases it still is. The Falmouth Road Race was suppose to be a "one and done" event. I hate running. The first people to welcome and encourage me were Ed Pry and Sean MacMillen. These two sober warriors didn't know ANYTHING about me. However, they believed I could run and find strength and heal as part of The Herren Project. I promised them (jokingly) I would run my first marathon with them. They invited me to run Pittsburgh Marathon 2021. I don't remember exactly how it happened, but I did register for this event. This would be very meaningful because I would meet these two wonderful, funny and caring souls for the first time. COVID had a different plan and the marathon was canceled.
Our energy, grit, commitment and drive wasn't going to stop us despite the "formal" cancellation of Pittsburgh. So we decided to create our own marathon and call it, "The Burgh in NYC 2021". With the help of teammate, Walt Smith, a marathon course through the burrows of NYC was designed. Walt himself will also join us for part if not the entire 26.2. Actually, we invite ANYONE to join us for this 26.2 mile run ON MAY 2, 2021in NYC. We will laugh, cry, dance, sing and enjoy every single moment of each other's company and trust. We come from different places regarding substance use disorder. However, we recover and move forward together.
Since 2011, The Herren Project has provided life-saving support to individuals living with substance use disorder. We help people navigate the intricate treatment placement process and ensure they get into the right treatment center quickly, easily and affordably. In addition, we also offer recovery housing scholarships and recovery coaching to support people on their journey. Your donations fund these programs and more! We offer support to family members and loved ones affected by the disease of addiction through family consultations and online support groups. To help prevent the misuse of substances, we bring effective, holistic prevention programs to schools and communities. We also organize various community initiatives to raise awareness of substance use disorder and empower those affected by it. GIVE THE GIFT OF RECOVERY. Your generosity will help individuals and families get the support they need, prevent the misuse of substances and empower people to live their healthiest and happiest lives.
Thank you for your support!
