Story

Hi

My name is Claire Peters and as some of you may be aware, I was recently diagnosed with a rare type of Ovarian Cancer called teratoma.  This is a germ cell type of cancer and of all cancers diagnosed, only 1% is this type. This type of cancer is more common in men than women making my cancer even rarer!

Charing Cross Hospital in London are the only hospital in the UK that are able to treat this type of cancer.  My Consultant, Professor Seckl and his team have been amazing whilst I am receiving treatment, keeping me fully informed at all times.  Due to this, I would like to give something back to them to aid their research.

I want to raise awareness of this type of cancer, my journey as I receive treatment and fight this but also to raise funds to help the hospital carry out vital research into why and how cancers develop; better ways of detecting and monitoring cancers; and finding and testing new treatments.

The CTRT has played a key role in funding the world class research work undertaken by consultants and their teams at Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital in west London. A separately funded branch of the charity supports Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood, Middlesex.

The teams at Charing Cross and Hammersmith have made significant contributions to combat cancers affecting the ovaries, the placenta, testes, brain, kidneys and lungs. Whilst more lives are being saved, the number of cancer patients is increasing because people are living longer and some cancers develop with age.
