Story

Remap make things possible for those of us who have to deal with the impossible.

On August 18th of 2018 I will be taking part in the Super Hero Series Half Triathlon alongside Will. I will be doing the swimming and 'run' sections (with help from my amazing Husband) and Will will be completing the impressive 10k cycle! http://superheroseries.co.uk/2018-superhero-tri

The superhero series is a trialthon for everyone and unlike most events, this won't be about the quickest time possible, it will be all about finishing.

A little about why this is such a challenge... As a child I did at least one sponsered event a year, swimming marathons for charity. But through adolecence something wasn't right. It wasn't until my late teens/early twenties that I was diagnosed with several conditions; HEDS, POTS and Sciatica. These mean everyday has its own set of challenges, from relentless chronic pain, being unable to stand or walk for short periods to feeling dizzy and experiencing 'brain fog'. The idea of a sponsered event seemed impossible. But after hearing Remap needed volunteers to take part in the superhero series to help raise money for the charity I couldn't get it off my mind, so here I am.

Remap are an incredible charity who I highly suggest you check out! http://www.remap.org.uk/ They create custom aids and solutions for disabled people regardless of their age, income or circumstance. And most importantly for so many disabled people they do this free of charge! They are a group of volunteer engineers, electronics and computer experts who are given problems which cannot be solved by anything that is commercially available. They then work in their own free time to create a custom solution for the person who needs it. Which for so many, including myself, is life changing. Again I encourage you to look at their website, they are just outstanding!

The solution Remap found for me... I use a wheelchair outside of my home as I cannot stand or walk far. I have a manual chair that I need help to push, and an electric mobility scooter which I can use on my own (unless it needs lifting into a car haha) So when my Husband is working and no one else is free, I can't, like most Mum's, walk my daughter to the park. And at about 6 months old she figured out how to 'help' me with the hand controls (she crashed into a lady once, not joking) So I couldn't trust her on my lap going out near roads, and I would really struggle to hold her. So I had resigned myself to the fact that this couldn't happen for me. That's when I applied for a TV show to find a solution to my problem, I wasn't selected, but they suggested Remap to me. And thank goodness they did. I sent an email asking if there would be anyway someone could come up with a way of attatching a bike trailer to the back of my electric scooter so I could take my daughter to the park. And within a month or so I had exactly that! It wasn't simple; as my wheelchair folds, so it had to be removable, not too fiddly because of my lack of grip and other needs. But thanks to Remap's amazing engineers I have the solution, which is the big picture you see up top!

Remap cannot run without vital donations! So that's where you come in. Every pound helps! If that's all you can afford please donate it, if enough people did that we would be able to raise a substaintal sum. Of course if you are able and would like to please do donate more. Their work is invaluable!
