Story
I'm running the Marathon de Paris in April 2011 and hoping to raise some money for the NACC. Fortunately I'm not a sufferer of Crohn's but my close friend Paul is and so this is a charity which is close to my heart. Furthermore...
Crohn's Disease
It affects approximately 60,000 people in the UK, that’s about 1 in 1000
Between 3,000 and 6,000 new cases are diagnosed each year
Research shows that the number of people with Crohn’s Disease has been rising steadily, particularly among young people.
Common symptoms of Crohn’s:
- Intestinal bleeding
- Intestinal ulceration
- Inflammation
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Chronic fatigue
That’s just for starters. Once the disease really gets going, these are some of the things the patient can look forward to:
- Bowel obstructions
- Abscesses
- Necrotic tissue
- Ruptured intestines
- Fistulas (a tunnel between one organ and another, including the skin)
- Septicaemia
There are over 100 ailments associated with Crohn’s such as osteoporosis, arthritis, cancer, mouth and eye inflammation, gallstones and erythema nodosum (painful inflammation / ulceration of the skin).
All sounds horrendous to me...
