As you will now know I have a place to run the Virgin London Marathon 2010 with JDRF. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is a charity dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. I am one of 350,000 people in the UK with type 1 diabetes, more than 25,000 of them children. The incidence is increasing by about four per cent each year. The largest increase is in children under five – there has been a five-fold increase in diagnosis in this age group over the last 20 years.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June 1996. It came as a complete shock to Rob and myself just over six months after being married. Just over a year later we had Joseph and in 2000 Robert, both pregnancies were very challenging trying to ensure I kept tight control of my blood sugars to keep them safe and health. I achieved this with Rob, family, friends and the specialist diabetes teams in Surrey and Northern Ireland.

Earlier this year I started running again and felt that I needed a challenge which was to get a place in the 2010 London Marathon and I did this through the JDRF Team Pingu. I have agreed to raise £1500 for them which is appropriate as JDRF raises money to drive world-class research to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its complications. JDRF also supports families living with type 1 diabetes, you can find out more by visiting their website www.jdrf.org.uk

I really appreciate you offering me your support both for running the London Marathon 2010 and donating to JDRF.

Thank you from Dorothy

Thursday 7th January - Thanks for everyones continued support. Just to keep you up to date with my progress, the last few weeks have been difficult because of the bitter cold and snow. I am having to train on the bike in the kitchen more than I had planned. Not sure when I will get out for a run although did last weekend. About 15 weeks to go...... Thanks, stay safe and warm, Dorothy
