This summer I, alongside 5 other students, will be travelling to South Africa with Liverpool Hope University's charity, Global Hope, to volunteer in Sparrow Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in Melville. 

Whilst there we will be working with children in the 'Foundation School' teaching them different parts of the curriculum. This school provides both remedial and specialised education to children with learning difficulties between the ages of 7 and 13. The children have a diverse range of abilities and whilst at school they focus on both core subjects and life skills.

As well as supporting teachers with delivery of the curriculum and sharing our skills and strategies with them, part of the project will be to design and renovate an old classroom into a reading area for the children. The reading area will support the pupils academically and socially as they will be able to discuss books  developing their communication skills as well as reading and language skills. 

Participating in this project is a brilliant opportunity to make a difference to the lives of the children in this school. Being able to initially support the teachers and provide them with additional ideas and resources will impact the future children as we are only helping current pupils but providing resources for years to come.
